Senator Graham Clueless on Jobs
Says laid off 61-year-old just needs tech training

Democratic challenger Bob Conley, running for South Carolina's U.S. Senate seat, debated incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham on Saturday, October 11. During the debate, Senator Graham was asked what the reporter's 61-year-old father should do, now that he's been laid off from the company he worked at for 33 years. Graham's answer: "…let's send him back to technical school…"

"Graham's answer to the jobs question illustrates how out of touch Washington is with the issues that are killing off our Middle Class," said Conley after the debate. "Telling a 61-year-old on the verge of retirement that he should attend technical school to prepare himself for a new job is ludicrous," Conley said.

"Meanwhile, Graham wants to bring into our country more foreign workers who would compete with our young college graduates and the growing number of laid off elderly workers who are forced to put off their retirement," Conley said. "This is a no-win situation for South Carolina and our nation."

During the debate, Graham stated that Americans already get preference for jobs over foreign nationals. "This is simply not true," Conley said after the debate. "Law firms and consultants do a brisk business helping companies to avoid hiring American workers by showing them how to get around our labor laws, visa requirements, and Labor Department procedures. Senator Graham has turned a blind eye to all of this," said Conley.

"Graham continues to defend trade agreements that encourage our manufacturing base to move overseas, resulting in massive job losses and driving up the trade deficit with Communist China, which helps prop up a brutal regime," Conley said. "Then he disingenuously implies that doing anything to equalize this situation to a level playing field is tantamount to walling off America," said Conley.

"This is the kind of reasoning that has led to the near destruction of our entire economy," said Conley. "Lindsey Graham might be very proud of a track record like this, but South Carolinians are the ones feeling the pain," Conley said.

"In November, voters will have to decide if they want more pain with Lindsey Graham as their Senator, or want a return to peace and prosperity with Bob Conley as their Senator," said Conley.
